Glenview

Passers-through zipping along Lake Avenue in Glenview are often startled by the sight of a herd of grazing cows. The chickens, sheep, pigs and draft horses are usually out of sight, but still a presence at Wagner Farm. It was one of the last working farms in Cook County until it became part of Glenview's extensive Park District.

Until the 60s, when they began giving way to some of the North Shore's lushest subdivisions, country clubs and corporate headquarters campuses, farms and the Glenview Naval Air Station were among Glenview's most prominent features.

The air station is gone, replaced by The Glen, a nearly 2-square mile mixed-use planned development.  Wagner Farm and The Grove, a national historic landmark, icons of Glenview's rural and agricultural heritage are now unique educational venues.

The history of The Glen, Wagner Farm and The Grove weaves together threads from Glenview's defining ethos: civic involvement, residents who care about preserving the natural environment, and care even more about education. If there's one thing that ties together Glenview's disparate parts, it's the community's focus on affording its children the very best of educational opportunities.

City services, park district

The Village of Glenview provides a full range of municipal services, including a professional police department and a fire department with emergency medical services capabilities. The Glenview Public Library, which has a new building nearing completion, is one of the best on the North Shore.

Nearly two square miles of Cook County Forest Preserve border parts of eastern Glenview. The Glenview Park District operates 26 parks on 480 acres offering every conceivable recreational amenity, including an 18-hole public golf course. It also conducts a full year-round suite of recreational, sports and educational programs.

Housing stock

Much of Glenview's housing stock has been developed within the past 50 years. The development of The Glen, which is ongoing, has added a wide variety of new construction within the past 15 years.

With a median home price of nearly $500,000, Glenview is an affluent community, but one that offers a wide selection of far more modestly priced homes, condominiums and townhomes. Estate-sized homes on acreage are also available in the multi-million bracket.

Transportation

Two stops on Metra's Milwaukee District / North Line whisk Glenview residents downtown in 35 to 45 minutes on express and local trains. Eight Pace bus routes connect to the train stations and to adjacent suburbs.

The Metra tracks run on a north – south axis near the center of town, enabling access by car within a few minutes. The downtown Glenview station is convenient to nearby higher-density apartment, townhome and condominium developments.

Residents in eastern Glenview access the Edens Expressway. The Tri-State Tollway (I-94/294) is near the village's western border.

Shopping, dining, nightlife

Even before the development of The Glen, Glenview residents benefited from dense retail development ranging from quaint shops and restaurants in the pedestrian-friendly downtown to the upscale Old Orchard mall, anchored by Macy's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and Lord & Taylor, in neighboring Skokie. Northbrook Court is a few minutes away from most of Glenview.

The Glen Town Center
and other retail areas of The Glen added scores of retailers, from Costco to one-of-a-kind restaurants and boutiques.

Schools

Most public school students attend Glenview School District 34, which has a rich history of high-achieving schools, and Glenbrook South High School, which consistently ranks among the state's top schools.…

Students in a part of eastern Glenview attend Avoca District 37 grade schools and the vaunted New Trier High School.
